The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Most Ambitious RPG to Date

The speculation surrounding The Game Awards has been intense, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious image of a desert monolith. The secret is finally answered. Larian Studios is creating a fresh Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer packed with striking imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.

A Different Direction

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio warned that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.

However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This phrasing suggests that the team could be designing a real-time experience instead of another tactical title. For now, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it pioneered the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, branching plots, and flexible progression—elements that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths only possible if you're playing as a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also famously flexible, allowing players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be solved in multiple ways, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you heeded something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a inventive way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can look forward to more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
