Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the option to challenge specific calls from the official, echoing the protocol currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
